As well as lifetime accumulating a huge set of production cameras for experimentation, Yoshi set about making many of his own. He also built and customised lenses, extending the scope of conventional camerawork, disrupting assumptions about focus, framing as well as re-composing photographs in the darkroom.

In his most recent work he coupled 100 year old lenses with contemporary mirrorless cameras. He inverted lens sets to build super macro and even did away with the lens to shoot multi pinhole, fuzzy and evocative digital images.

In his blog there are many references to the Yoshi Handy which he made in the 70’s and went on to build several more versions to control flash light and innovating LED ring flash assemblies that we see commonly now.
