To date we have been unpacking and presenting some discoveries from the huge collection of analog photographs in the Yoshi stack. What that has revealed is a scale of activity and breadth of interest that has yet to be fully unpacked let alone understood but which is at least matched by the vast quantity of digital images that also demand catagorisation and review.

PhotoPrism is the free and open source image management system we have installed on the archive repository to help us label the samples of analog photos we log. It is largely populated with the contents of Yoshi’s back-up hard disks which are automatically labelled and sorted. Cherry blossoms feature in huge quantities and a word search will bring many forward! Other filters by date, subject and even camera all return very different perspectives.

Now after filtering out thousands of duplicates, cruft and noisy files there is a comprehensive database brimming with colour, light and textures spanning the history of digital photography. Despite the comprehensive service of this image AI, it’s still a formidable task to review the sorted sub collections and genres present to bring forward an appreciation and acknowledgement of a working life.
